Recent NSF Award to School of Science and School of Medicine Faculty Permits the
Acquisition of Additional Mass Spectrometers
|
|
The Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology, in collaboration with faculty from the
Department of Biology and faculty from the IU School of Medicine, has received a
$479,590 NSF grant to purchase state-of- the-art mass spectrometers. Two instruments, an
Agilent 6520 Q-TOF (quadrupole time-of-flight) and sensitivity-enhanced 6410 triple
quadrupole spectrometers will have great versatility in exploratory qualitative and
high-sensitivity quantitative lipidomic, metabolomic, and proteomic analyses. Two
chromatography packages will allow the sensitive, rapid resolution of analytes. The PI
on the grant, Prof. Robert Minto notes that, together with a 500-MHz NMR spectrometer
acquired through NSF funding in 2006, the modernized analytical capabilities in the
department for synthetic and biomolecules greatly expands the potential for in-house and
collaborative research, as well as educational opportunities for IUPUI and local
Indianapolis Public School students.
Dr. Karl Dria, a C&CB research scientist, is
coordinating the installation and routine operation of the instrument, which is expected
to be installed and operational during January 2009.

Solid-Phase Synthesis & Combinatorial Chemistry-Theory & Practice
|
|
An exciting and practical new graduate-level course to be taught by Prof. William Scott
this Fall (Tu/Th 6:00 PM) will explore how the tools of solid-phase synthesis and
combinatorial chemistry are being used to solve a wide variety of problems requiring
chemical solutions. Examples range from medicinal chemistry and drug discovery to new
catalyst creation, from new "chiral selectors" to new biochemical probes. The course
will focus on the rationale for employing a combinatorial approach in chemical
discovery. It will teach the basics of solid-phase organic chemistry, and the
methodology, equipment, and analytical technology employed to use it as a tool to
rapidly and effectively carry out a combinatorial approach to problem solving.
